Can you pay tolls online without E-ZPass in Maryland? ›

Pay-By-Plate is a hassle-free way to pay Maryland tolls. Tolls are automatically billed to your credit card each time you use Maryland's facilities, with no need for a transponder. With Pay-By-Plate, each time you travel through a participating toll facility, a camera takes a photo of your registered license plate.

A $25 civil penalty will be assessed for each citation. Failure to pay or to contest the toll violation can lead to suspension of or refusal to renew your Maryland vehicle registration and/or referral to the Maryland Central Collection Unit (CCU).

Video tolling is an alternative to E-ZPass, but is not recommended for frequent travelers. Toll facility customers who do not have an E-ZPass and travel the ICC will be sent a bill in the mail and charged the Video Toll Rate (VTR).

Maryland's tolling system, DriveEzMD, does NOT charge any fees to accept and process your Video Toll payment. If an Internet search engine has taken you to a website that is trying to charge you a processing fee to pay your toll, this is NOT DriveEzMD.com, Maryland's official tolling website.

The Maryland Transportation Authority is a member of the E-ZPass Interagency Group and accepts all valid electronic-toll transponders affiliated with the E-ZPass system. E-ZPass is accepted at all toll plazas from Maryland to Illinois and North Carolina to Maine.

What happens if you don't have an E-ZPass for Chesapeake Bay Bridge? ›

If you do not have an E-ZPass and you go underneath the toll gantry, you will be charged via mailed invoice. A photo of your license plate will be recorded and you will be billed. Tolls via the mailed invoice method are more expensive than using E-ZPass due to administrative costs associated with invoicing.

Transponders should be returned in person or by first-class prepaid mail. Transponders returned to E-ZPass Maryland will remain the property of MDTA under all circumstances. Upon termination of this Agreement and return of the transponder(s), if applicable, any account balance will be refunded to the Account holder.

In Maryland, windshield mounted E-ZPass transponders are free. License plate mounts are available for a modest fee. There are no monthly or annual fees for Maryland residents.

Drivers who use Maryland toll facilities without E-ZPass or Pay-By-Plate will receive a Notice of Toll Due (NOTD) in the mail. NOTDs can be paid here and may qualify for a discount if an NOTD has not been mailed. Failure to pay may result in additional penalties, collections actions, and prevent registration renewal.

Maryland E-ZPass interior transponders are free of charge. A prepaid toll amount of $25 is required for each transponder. There is a yearly fee of $18, which is waived for Maryland addresses. Customer's accounts will auto-replenish when the account balance falls below $10 to approximately one month's level of use.
