How far apart should you place luminary bags? ›

Bags should be placed anywhere from 3' to 10' apart. This is up to you as a neighborhood to decide. Whatever the decision is, you should be consistent throughout the neighborhood. We recommend our long burning candles for luminaria so they will burn late into the night.

To keep the bags from moving once placed outdoors, you'll need to weigh them down. We recommend using either sand or gravel to prevent them from blowing away. Aim to distribute at least three inches of sand or gravel in the bottom of each bag.

This will depend on the individual room and what it's used for. As a handy rule of thumb, a sitting room or bedroom will generally require around 10-20 lumens per square foot, while a bathroom or kitchen will need a stronger level of lighting, at around 70-80 lumens per square foot.

Luminarias are usually placed in rows along walls, roofs, and walkways to form a holiday display, especially on Christmas Eve.

You'll only need a few supplies for this easy DIY project. For my luminaries I used white paper bags, but brown works just fine, too! I trimmed the top of my bags with scalloped scissors for a little extra character.
