Detroit's churches and its young people. As co-chairperson of the Alliance For Detroit Churches, she worked to keep open Detroit churches slated to close under an archdiocesan reorganization plan announced in 1988. As a social worker, she gave hope and guidance to the city's youth, friends said. Mrs. May Frances May Frances May of Detroit died Tuesday of complications from surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, said her sister, Roberta Laster.

She co-chaired the alliance, part of the Detroit Catholic Pastoral Alliance, with the Rev. Norman Thomas of Sacred Heart Catholic Church since September 1988. She brought people together, even those who didn't belong to the churches they all fought to keep open, friends said. "She felt there was a need for them and she had a purpose in the community," her sister said. "A lot of people looked to her as the leader in the group." "The top man on the totem-pole or the bottom man, they were equal in front of Frances," said a friend, Sister Sharon Jordan.

"She was free inside and so very honest." Mrs. May was a social worker for the Detroit Public Schools since January 1988. "She enjoyed helping children," Laster said. She received a master's degree in social work from Wayne State University in 1987 and a bachelor's degree from Madonna College in Livonia. In November, she received the most votes in the parish council election at St.

John Juliana Catholic Church in Detroit. She was part of the committee that coordinated the merger of the two churches about two years ago, her sister said. She was born Frances Lewis in Selma, in 1946 and moved to Detroit with her family in 1952.
