Football fans have mocked Scotland in a series of memes following their disastrous start to Euro 2024.

The Scots went into the tournament with high hopes under Steve Clarke, but it took less than 10 minutes for ambitions to start unravelling when Florian Wirtz put the host nation ahead.

Jamal Musiala added a second minutes later, and Ryan Porteous saw red after he lunged in on Ilkay Gundogan in a bid to make a goal-saving tackle not long later.

Kai Havertz netted the penalty and Scotland went into the break 3-0 down, much to the amusem*nt of a number of fans on social media who wasted no time in producing memes to mock the Clarke's side.

A number of supporters joked that the side had been 'battered like a Mars bar,' which is a traditional dish in Scotland, involving the famous chocolate bar being deep fried and covered in batter.

A number of supporters referred to a national dish in the country, a battered Mars Bar, comparing it to Scotland and their performance

Another post compared Scotland's apparent pre-match mindset to that at full time, including an image of a Scottish warrior

'Scotland are like a Mars bar in a Glasgow chippy - getting totally battered,' one fan posted.

Another wrote: 'What do Scotland's football team and Scotland's Mars bars have in common? Battered.'

Elsewhere, a meme of a Scottish warrior was shared, captioned: '8pm,' followed by a picture of a man sat saying 'It's s***e being Scottish,' with the caption: '10pm.'

An account on X named 'England extra' re-shared a video from 2021, which showed a Scotland fan trying and failing to kick a bench in anger, captioned: 'Live scenes from Scotland.'

A third shared a viral video from The Chase, with chaser Mark Labbett exclaiming on the show: 'It doesn't matter, I give up, well played guys.' The caption read: 'Scotland's Euro 2024 campaign.'

Elsewhere, one account compared the situation to one once shown in popular sitcom The Simpsons, with Scottish character Groundskeeper Willie looking dejected next to a newspaper with the headline: 'Curse ye Germans.'

Another post played on the idea that England's rivals often support teams the Three Lions face

Things got worse for Germany in the second half, when Niclas Fullkrug scored a stunner to make it 4-0, and he thought he had added a fifth, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Antonio Rudiger's own goal was a late consolation for the Scots, but the writing was already on the wall, and Emre Can added a fifth moments from time.

Another meme mocking the British side included a famous Xbox message, where one user messaged another: 'Lad ya clearly the better player can ya just pass it around the back for the second half I wanna eat some toast.'

Another showed stewards failing to stop a series of pitch invaders, captioned: 'Scotland defence against Germany,' with a third playing on England's rivals supposedly supporting teams the Three Lions come up against, reading: 'Go and get the Serbia flags' ahead of Sunday's game.
