TERM 3 - School year - 2022/2023

Graduation - 21/6/23

Congratulations to our 6th class pupils on their graduation from secondary school. We wish them all every happiness as they start the next chapter of their education. A lovely graduation event was held in the school hall with the whole school and many parents in attendance. 6th class pupils entertained us with their funny skits and then led a school end of year service. We will miss you all!

Soccer Blitz - 15/6/23

Always a great day for pupils and parents! Thank you to Gorey Central for hosting the diocesan soccer blitz this year in Courtown. Every child in the school participated and they were all brilliant! Well done everyone!

Bake Day- 14/6/23

Thank you to Jackie, Lucy and Elizabeth who helped children bake a variety of baked goods today. The pupils all had a wonderful day and the delicious smell of lemon cake and chocolate chip cookies wafted through the corridors throughout the day. All pupils brought in donations on the day, with funds going towards the National Childrens' Health Foundation.

Locks for Love - 14/6/23

Well done to Emma Roache in 3rd class who headed to the hairdresser after school today to have her hair cut for 'Locks of Love'. We have all been watching her hair grow over the last few months in preparation for today. We are all very proud of her for supporting such a worthy cause and a cause which is close to all our hearts. All the events of today were in memory of a very special student on our school.

Sports Day - 13/6/23

This was a fantastic day. The sun shone brightly and we were joined by All Saints NS for all the whole day. It all kicked off at 9.15am with fun activity stations - a tag rugby station with Barney our coach, a team building station which challenged us all, a yoga station in the hall with Ms Kiersey and a water splash station. The children all had a great time, especially at the 'Splash the Teacher' station. We just don't know why they enjoyed this so much!!!!

At 12.30 parents joined us for all our races. These were competitive but fun with preschool pupils and parents all enjoying a couple of races as well. Everyone sat out in the sun enjoying the afternoon which finished with a visit from Mr Whippy. A much deserved cool treat for everyone.

Choral Festival - 9/6/23

The whole school travelled by coach to Wexford on Friday 9th June for a choral festival in St Iberius Church. Thank you to St Iberius National School who hosted this wonderful and joyous service which was attended by pupils from seven schools in the diocese. A lovely opportunity to join with these schools at this happy event.

Following on from the choral festival service in Wexford, we all headed to the beach for a very welcome play on what was a very sunny day. All Saints NS joined us for this and everyone had a great time building sandcastles, paddling in the water and of course running down the sand dunes. Well done to Ms Stanley who accepted some challenges to race down dunes!!

Dublin Zoo - 31/5/23

Our school tour to Dublin Zoo was a great success. The son shone as the whole school set off early in the morning. Thank you to all the parents who travelled with us and helped us on the day as well. There were lots of steps walked and lots of tired bodies as the bus pulled back in to Kilcommon at 5.30 that evening. A great day out for everyone.

U-20 6 Nations Cup comes to visit - 30/5/23

Thank you to our past pupil George Hadden who visited the school with the u 20 Rugby 6 Nations Cup 2023. There was great excitement as class photos were taken with the cup and George shared his experiences during the 6 Nations campaign and his build up to the Rugby World Cup in South Africa, and he answered a multitude of questions from pupils!

Welcome Bishop Wilkinson!- 30/5/23

We were delighted to welcome Bishop Wilkinson to Kilcommon N.S during the morning of Tuesday 30th May. He visited each of the classrooms introducing himself, taking time to answer questions, talk with the pupils, listen to them talk about their classwork as well as their plans for the school tour the following day..Afterwards he enjoyed a visit to our school garden. As our new bishop, this was his first time to visit our school but several pupils had already met him as he led our 6th class confirmation service recently in Gorey. We look forward to seeing him again soon.

Fire Brigade Car Wash - 27/5/23

A huge thanks to the members of Tinahely Fire Service who spent 4 hours out of their Saturday washong cars on our car park. Thank you to everyone who brought their cars to be washed and donated on the day. Over 1300W qA Euaws and divided between Kilcommon NS and South Wicklow Hospive Home Care. The sun shone as gleaming cars were spotted throughout the village.

School Garden - May 2023

Our school garden is back in business! All children have been busy and all our beds are planted with flowers -marigolds, wildflowers and sunflowers , herbs and a wide range of vegetables - beans, mangetout, carrots, beetroot, potatoes, lettuce and onions.

Running to Madrid! - May 2023

This month, pupils start their days running some laps of the school grounds. Each lap represents 1 km. Our aim is to run to Madrid, via some other cities, learning a few facts about each city as we go!. We are already almost half way there. A great way to start each day. A healthy mind in a healthy body!

HATCHING OUR CHICKS.
Thanks to one of our pupils who brought in fertilised eggs to school. The children were excited to watch eggs hatch out in our incubator into tiny chicks. They lived under the heat of a lamp for 2 weeks and now are re-housed to a local farm where they are doing very well.

New Owl Box - 4/5/23

Thank you to Tinahely TidyTowns committee and Tinahely Men's Shed for their donation of a fantastic owl box for the school. This has now been erected at the back of the church and we look forward to the first owls nesting there. Our assembly on Friday 18th May inckuded a school walk to view th new owl nest's home!

The Fosset's Cup (23/4/23) &The Coogan Cup (26/4/23)

Pupils in 5th & 6th enjoyed a great day of GAA football in the Fosset's Cup at the local pitch on Thursday 23rd April and 3rd & 4th similarly had a great day on Wednesday 26th April in the Coogan Cup. Thankfully, the weather stayed fine for both days and we were joined in the competitions by pupils from Crossbridge N.S. and Tinahely N.S. Well done to everyone who tool part and thank you to the organisers of both of these events.

Crossbridge Fair Day (21/4/23)

Thank you to everyone in Crossbridge N.S. for extending an invitation to our school to attend their fair day. All classes visited the fair and arrived back with a feast of goodies and treasures! It is lovely to build on the relationship between our schools.

Trip to Glendalough (20/4/23)

3rd & 4th class packed their bags and headed for a fantastic day in Glendalough on Thursday 20th April. The day was organised by the Wicklow Mountains Educational Centre and we were joined by pupils from Crossbridge N.S. for a fabulous day. A lot of steps were covered as pupils visited the lake and were guided through parts of the park by tutors from the Centre in Glengalough. The treasure hunt at the end of the day proved to be a highlight of the day for many as they learnt about the flora and fauna of the park.

Spelling Bee - Edith Horan (20/4/23)

Huge congratulations to Edith Horan in our 6th class who represented the school in the County Spelling Bee finals in St. Coen's NS in Rathnew. Edith was placed in an amazing 5th place on the day and we are all very proud of her. Well done Edith!
